Introduction to post-colonialism

 Answer the following questions on your blog:


1) Look at the first page. What is colonialism - also known as cultural imperialism? 
From the 16tg century onwards, European countries got into a race to see how many undiscovered lands they can conquer first 

2) Now look at the second page. What is postcolonialism? 
Refers less to a time time period and more to a critiquing of a though and the process of decolonisation 

3) How does Paul Gilroy suggest postcolonialism influences British culture?
He suggests Britain has still not faced up to its colonial past and this resulted in desire to still subjugate from different races 

4) What is 'othering'?
We identify someone being different or an alien to society 

5) What examples of 'othering' are provided by the article?
One example is a film love thy neighbour when a black family lives next to a white family 

6) What is 'double consciousness'? 
The othering can sometimes manifest into confusion over identity the confusion is known as double consciousness 

7) What are 'racial hierarchies'?
The idea that some races are superior to other ones 

8) What examples from recent media products challenge the idea of racial hierarchies? 
Paul Gilroy recounted an anecdote on Russell’s brand under the podcast when he was waiting in line at a post office
